S3-compatible object storage benchmarks: throughput, latency and compatibility

Object storage is compared on the S3 API because every provider tracked here exposes it, natively or as a compatible endpoint. Runs measure small-object latency and large-object throughput from a VM in the same region, and record which S3 features (versioning, lifecycle, presigned URLs, object lock) are supported.

Updated:

Direct answer

Benchmark S3-compatible storage with MinIO warp from an in-region VM: 4 KiB objects for request latency and 64 MiB objects for throughput, with mixed GET/PUT ratios. Report request rate, MiB/s and p99 latency, and check feature coverage, since compatibility differs between providers.

What is measured

  • GET and PUT throughput for large objects (MiB/s)
  • Request rate and p99 latency for small objects
  • S3 API feature coverage
  • Storage and egress pricing basis
